Pet Nutritional Counseling

Nutrition

Give your pet the nutrition they need!

As a veterinary hospital, we provide far more than surgery and other medical procedures for your pet. One of the things we emphasize most is helping people provide the proper nutrition to their pet. We have expert staff members who are educated and trained specifically in pet nutrition.

A balanced diet of nutritious food and the availability of fresh, clean water are essential to the health and longevity of your pet. Nutrition is one of the factors, along with proper exercise, most under the control of the pet owner. This is one of the many exclusive services we offer, including dog and cat boarding in New Orleans, day care and more!

But what constitutes a proper diet for a pet? There are a number of factors to keep in mind.

  • Don’t be overly influenced by brand name and marketing, or price. Some very familiar brands of pet food are excellent, some are not very good at all, and some are in between. The same is true of pet food brands you probably have never heard of. Just because it’s advertised, or it makes bold claims on its packaging, or it’s unusually expensive, don’t assume it’s good. We’ll help you to understand which are the better brands. Some that we carry that we recommend include Purina Veterinary Diet, Hills Science Diet, and Royal Canin.

  • Reading and understanding the labels on pet foods will help you to make better choices. But the labels typically only list the ingredients, which doesn’t tell you the nutritional content of the food or the quality of those ingredients. So our experts are available to provide additional guidance that goes beyond what’s printed on the package.

  • There is a procedure in place to independently test pet foods for safety and to determine if what the companies say about them is true. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) works with the FDA to ensure the quality and safety of pet food. However, only some brands are tested by the AAFCO. Many popular brands are not. So it’s not surprising that there have been so many pet food recalls in recent years. We’ll guide you toward the AAFCO-tested brands that warrant the highest confidence.

  • Some pets with certain medical conditions require prescription veterinary diets. If your pet suffers from allergies, joint problems, thyroid or kidney disease, urinary problems, obesity, or certain other conditions, we can prescribe a specific diet that optimizes your pet’s health.

  • Pet nutritional needs vary at different life stages. Puppies require different food to be at their healthiest than do elderly dogs. More active pets have different nutritional needs than less active pets. We’ll work with you to find not just a good diet, but a good diet for your pet specifically.
